It's one of the most common questions in logistics and warehousing: how much weight can a pallet really hold? The answer isn't a single number, because the same pallet holds different weights depending on how it's used. In this guide we explain the three types of load, the factors that determine them, the real ranges in kilograms and how to choose the right pallet based on the weight of your product.
What are the three types of pallet load?
Every serious manufacturer describes a pallet's capacity with three different figures, not one. Mixing them up is the most common cause of broken pallets and loads falling from racks.
- Static load: the maximum weight the pallet holds when it is stationary on a flat, firm surface, such as a concrete floor. It is always the highest figure, because the entire base distributes the weight.
- Dynamic load: the maximum weight it withstands while being lifted and moved with a pallet jack or forklift. It is lower than the static load because movement adds vibration, tilting and impacts.
- Racking load (rack storage): the weight it holds when supported only by two opposite rails of a rack, with no surface under the full base. It is always the lowest figure and the most critical one for warehouse safety.
Rule of thumb: if you plan to store the pallet on metal racking, the figure to look at is the racking load, never the static one. A pallet that holds 4,000 kg on the floor can fail under 1,000 kg when supported only by two rails.
How much weight does a standard pallet hold in kg?
As a general industry reference, a standard-size wooden pallet (for example 1200 x 1000 mm, American-style) handles these ranges:
- Static load: 3,000 to 4,000 kg in common designs, and up to 5,000–5,500 kg in reinforced block pallets.
- Dynamic load: 1,000 to 1,500 kg in common designs, and up to 2,000–2,500 kg in heavy-duty pallets.
- Racking load: 600 to 1,000 kg, depending on the design and the spacing between rails.
A good benchmark is the Euro pallet (EUR/EPAL), one of the most standardized pallets in the world: it measures 1200 x 800 mm, is built with 11 boards, 9 blocks and 78 special nails, and its safe working load in motion is 1,500 kg, with up to 4,000 kg static and around 1,000 kg in racking. Being so tightly standardized is exactly what makes it predictable.
About pricing: there is no single pallet price, because load capacity changes the cost. More stringers, thicker boards and better lumber raise both strength and price. That's why the right approach is to get a quote based on your weight and application rather than relying on a generic number.
What factors determine how much weight a pallet can hold?
Two pallets of the same size can hold very different weights. These are the factors that really matter:
- Wood species: pine is light and economical; hardwood mixes offer greater strength for heavy loads.
- Pallet design: block pallets (with 9 blocks and 4-way entry) generally hold more than stringer pallets (2-way entry), which are designed for moderate loads.
- Number of stringers and boards: more support points and more boards distribute the weight better. Pallets with 2–3 stringers handle static loads of 1,500–3,000 kg; those with 5 or more stringers or block designs reach 5,500 kg static.
- Lumber thickness and board spacing: thicker, closely spaced boards keep the load from sagging or flexing.
- Type and number of nails or staples: the fastening matters as much as the wood; poor nailing reduces actual capacity.
- Moisture content: very wet lumber weighs more and is weaker; drying and treatment stabilize its performance.
- Condition: a used or cracked pallet, or one with replaced boards, does not perform like a new one.

How do I choose a pallet based on the weight of my load?
Choosing well prevents breakage, accidents and overspending on pallets that are more expensive than necessary. Follow these steps:
- Calculate the actual weight: add the weight of the product plus its packaging and any load you will stack on top. Don't use an "approximate" weight.
- Define how it will be moved and stored: if it goes on racks, use the racking figure; if it is only moved by forklift, go by the dynamic load.
- Apply a safety margin: choose a pallet with capacity above the maximum expected weight; never operate at the limit of the manufacturer's figure.
- Match the design to the weight: for heavy loads, go with a block pallet, more stringers and thicker boards; for light loads, avoid overpaying.
- Consider load distribution: weight concentrated at one point demands more than weight evenly spread across the entire base.
