Does it meet delivery times consistently?

A supplier can promise attractive lead times and miss them month after month. What matters is not an isolated lead time but sustained performance (fill rate): what percentage of your orders arrives complete and on time. Ask for historical indicators, not promises.

Also evaluate flexibility: can they adjust deliveries when your schedule changes? Do they handle partial or scheduled deliveries? For industries with assembly lines that cannot stop —automotive, appliances, food— a pallet delay equals a plant shutdown with costs by the minute.

Does it offer packaging engineering, not just product?

This is where suppliers and partners part ways. Packaging engineering means the manufacturer analyzes your load, your handling and your logistics chain to design the optimal pallet: the right size, wood type, number of stringers and load capacity, without over-specifying (which raises cost) or under-specifying (which puts your goods at risk).

For technical context, the most common size in Mexico is the 1.20 × 1.00 m pallet, which accounts for a large share of the volume in industrial supply chains. Typical load capacities of a wooden pallet vary by design: usual ranges run from 600 to 1,600 kg of dynamic load (in motion), with higher figures for static load (at rest). A good supplier knows how to translate your real weight and transport mode into the right specification, instead of selling you a generic catalog.

Does it guarantee continuous supply (VMI)?

VMI (Vendor Managed Inventory, or supplier-managed replenishment) is one of the most valuable differentiators for large operations. In this model, the supplier monitors your actual consumption and replenishes pallets before they run out, holding stock in a warehouse near your plant. You no longer issue reactive manual orders: supply becomes a continuous flow.

The benefits are concrete: fewer line stoppages from pallet shortages, less warehouse space tied up in your own inventory, and better turnover. Combined with just-in-time principles, VMI gives you on-demand availability without carrying the cost of storage. Ask whether your candidate can run this program and with what level of data visibility.

Does it have the coverage and redundancy you need?

If you operate at several sites or in different regions, geographic coverage and logistics backup are decisive. A supplier with no spare capacity or backup inventory is a single point of failure: if it gets saturated or has an incident, you run out of pallets.
